Therapy FAQs: 10 things to know before your first session.
Do I need to prepare any notes before the first session?
It’s not compulsory to prepare any notes. But if you find it helpful to note down some important points, events, or timelines, you’re free to do so.
What happens in the first therapy session?
Your therapist will take a detailed case history to understand your personality better. It involves exploring important areas such as academics, work, relationships, and family.
After that, you can discuss your challenges and establish common goals.
How many sessions do I need to take?
Your therapist will gauge the nature of your problems and circumstances and can tell you an approximate number of sessions/ duration you should seek therapy for.
It’s not possible for therapists to tell you an exact number because every person’s journey is unique. Their life experiences, resources and support systems are all different from each other and can influence their progress.
Will my therapist give me advice on what I should do?
No, but your therapist will work on making you equipped to find answers to the problem.
Therapists generally don’t tell you what you should or shouldn’t do because you are the person living your life. The goal is to take ownership of your life and decisions.
What’s the right age to start therapy?
There’s no “perfect” age to start therapy. Mental health professionals are trained to work with people across different stages of life, and many specialise in specific age groups and concerns. Some psychologists specialise in working with children and adolescents, while others work primarily with adults and older adults.
If you’re considering therapy, look for a mental health professional who works with your age group and understands your concerns.
PS: You can seek therapy even if you're a child, a PhD student, a parent, or a senior citizen. The only prerequisite is that you are ready to work on yourself.
Is it okay if I cry in a session?
It’s more than okay if you want to cry in front of your therapist. No emotions are invalid. Talking about certain problems can make you feel overwhelmed and it’s totally okay to express yourself freely in a session.
Why is a cancellation fee charged if I don’t show up or cancel?
Your therapist reserves the e
ntire 60 minute slot exclusively for you. When a session is cancelled or missed at short notice, it is not possible to offer that slot to another client. The cancellation fee helps account for the time reserved for your session.
Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
Yes, online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy for many people. But you’re allowed to have your preferences. What matters is finding a format in which you feel comfortable, safe and able to engage with the process.
Can I have a consultation before deciding to start therapy?
Yes. You can ask your therapist if they can connect over a short call, usually known as a discovery call. In this call, you can ask any doubts or questions about the process. Consultation calls are a great entry point if you're doing therapy for the first time.
Will my therapist judge me if I share something embarrassing?
No. Your therapist is not there to judge you but to help you understand patterns, process emotions and cope with challenges more effectively.
